West End Fire Company
Chestnuthill Township is protected against the ravages of fire by the West End Fire Company. The company covers all of Chestnuthill Township and provides mutual aid to surrounding municipalities 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Fire stations are located on Route 715 in Brodheadsville, Route 115 in Mount Effort, and in Sun Valley on Juniper Road.
The West End Fire Company was chartered in 1932 and merged with the Sun Valley Volunteer Fire Company in 2010. There are approximately 60 active Volunteer Firefighters and 10 Junior Firefighters. Operating out of its three stations, the company is equipped with nine pieces of apparatus including two Class A Pumpers, a 75’ Ladder Truck, a Heavy Rescue Truck, a 2500 gallon Tanker Truck, a Light Rescue/Mini-Pumper, a Special Operations Unit and two Brush Fire Trucks. A full complement of Hurst Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tools is operated by the company, as well as on-board foam capability. The company also maintains its original piece of apparatus, a 1932 Buffalo 750 GPM pumper.
Services provided by the company include fire suppression, all types of technical rescue, hazardous materials operations level response, medical response, and public fire prevention and education. The company averages between 3,500 personnel hours per year in training, emergencies, and fundraising activities. Training Drills are held the 1st, 3rd, 4th, (and 5th when applicable) Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 pm. New volunteers are always needed for firefighting, associate members and Ladies Auxiliary.
